I'll let the others wax lyrical about the M5, but I would say one thing: if your father is currently tooling around in an S320, an M5 is likely to be something of a culture shock, especially if he's expecting magic carpet ride and seamless auto changes. My immediate advice would be to opt for a 540i.

The 740i with Sport package belies its size: you really wouldn't know it was a large barge and is actually highly adept across town, on the open road, or down a country lane. Really. My experience is that it can be just as entertaining to drive as one of the smaller series, and you have to drive it to believe it.

As for "control", the 5-series rules the roost here; there is none better. The M5 is magical and the 540i shares its foundations...
