I am getting a 996 911 C4

Unlucky. They're good cars but massively, massively overpriced, with Porsche turning out what is effectively a mid-grade sports car that trades off the 911 name and little else. I had one and won't be buying Porsche ever again. They are essentially $40K cars with a $40K moron tax added for the car's famous moniker; the Boxster represents far better value for money in that it is 50% the cost but almost 100% as capable.

Still got time to change your mind? ;)

As for comparisons with the M5, the BMW feels a whole lot more complete, and I really, truly, see no reason why anyone would wish to trade down, save for the fact the 911 has more road presence and that beguiling gold crest on the bonnet.

When you hear of Porsche's amazing profits, you begin to see that, when it comes to car buying, there's little logic at the higher end of the scale -- where the wallet is capacious but the sense lacking.

IMHO.
