A colleague has a '98 S8. Fast, beautifully screwed together, plush interior, anonymous but muscular looks, glue-like four-wheel drive, etc. etc., but a remarkably dull experience at the same time. Then again, that's criticism that could be levelled at any modern Audi bar the new A4 or RS4.
The S8's ride is also rather fidgety, especially around town over drain covers and poor surfaces, and the steering a little vague. I would also question bodywork repairs, seeing as it's a specialist job to haul dents out of aluminium panels. And no, the engine don't sound anything like the one in the film -- which is too bad.
If you're comparing the M5 and S8 with the hope of arriving at a buying decision, the M5 is the easy winner here, being faster, a more engaging car to drive, and being clobbered a lot less by depreciation.
Unless you want an auto 'box :)
