BMW is recalling 14,000 2001 X5 sport-utility vehicles because the lower end of the steering column spindle may not have been inserted fully into its coupling. Upshot: Drivers may lose the ability to steer. The automaker is recalling 3,200 2000-01 M5s; 2001 740Is, 740Ils and 750Ils, all with 18-inch wheels, because the factory's mounting machine damaged sidewalls of tires, which may suddenly fail.
