I have to believe that the BMW marketing people purposely intended for the M5 to remain faster, and the king. So they decided to restrain the M3's power. Just a theory on my part, but I concluded from the early rumors that the M3 was going to be a rocket, and easily beat the M5.It certainly can out handle it on a track due to the weight difference. There's no comparison when considering the engine compartment and interiors, after all it's still a 3 series. I just thought it would be much faster, beating the M5 by a few car lengths.
i was concerned/frustrated that the new M3 would be faster than the M5, but i got to test that out today when i raced a 2001 M3 up to 100mph.. To my suprise I had the lead the whole way by more than a car length and gaining until we hit a red light.. Not that it would be the end of the world if it was faster but i like to be on top!
