Steve, hate to do this to you, but Lux tax on a car that's $75,000 is $1,400 ($75,000- $40,000= 35,000; 35,000 X 0.04=1,400)

Gas Guzzler tax is part of the MSRP (on M5 is around $2,000 (?)) so a 2001 M5 "FULLY" loaded w/ every option, including Gazzler tax is appx. $75,000 + 1,400 lux tax = appx. $76,400.

Sales tax in MOST states applies regardless of new or used car status (Especially in CA). So that's a wash.

so in this respect, Oleg's info is fairly close to the "correct answer".

hope this helps,

beewang

A new M5 costs over $80K "out the door."

A used vehicle for seventy-something actually COSTS you seventy-something because the previous buyer has already paid those taxes.
