Don't really care what the magazines report, but I run consistent 4.6-4.7 0-60s with my CLK55 (and 1/4 mile times of 13.5 -13.6). Maybe the magazines don't run with the traction control off. My runs against my friends M5 were to 80 mph - above that maybe the M5 would pull away, but I don't know. The runs against the assorted M5s and M3s (but not an E46 M3, yet) were your typical street races - nothing above 80. BTW, the CLK55 is to the 430 as the M5 is to the 540. Here are the differences between the CLK55 and the CLK430 (so that you can be informed, not just emotional): more powerful engine, strengthened transmission with 30% faster shifts, sport suspension, larger brakes, much tighter steering and the list continues.
