After all it's about the same price an an M5. AMG produces the number that they forcast to sell. In the US, most people are choosing the M5, and all mags are rating it better overall.

AMG production doubled last year (although I should make the point that sales does not equal competence: Ford Explorer sales are amazing; it remains however a fundamentally mediocre way of getting about). This I put down to the brilliance of the M5 -- yes, the press have indeed been "very positive" :)

The M5 has helped awaken a sector of the market that has been dormant for some time. In the same way that the Mazda MX-5 rejuvinated a dead area for small, keenly-priced compact roadsters, the M5 has kicked a number of super sedans out of bed... including the E55.

The E55 remains the Beemer's only auto rival; I know of at least four M5 owners including myself who "traded across" because of this (let's face it, modern driving means traffic and queueing). Ballooning sales across the whole Benz range can only spell danger for BMW, and if the new E-class is "got right" the AMG version will be truly astounding and even you might turn :)

Anyway. Just like the MX-5, the M5 is not the be-all and end-all of automotive design. Like any car it has its strengths and its faults, and
when the new M5 arrives in a few years time, you'll be hard pushed to remember why you made all the fuss you did...
