I think the short block on the M5 is about 30 pounds lighter than the M3 motor - this is where the aluminum saves the v8 the most.

I've also seen numbers that show the fully trimmed weight, including the entire longblock, accessories, fluids (lots more oil!), and whatnot cause the M5 motor to come in at a fighting weight of slightly more than the M3 similarly dressed.

I've given up trying to split the hairs, thus I summarize that the two engines are "similar" in weight - give or take 50 pounds of each other.

The +600 pounds for the M5 chasis dwarfs any engine weight difference.
