I picked up my 01 M5 in munich on Tuesday. and drove to Garmisch-Partinkirchin on Friday. My son smelled smoke but we didnät notice the smoke coming out of the front wheel wells. We finally stopped, got out and saw flames through the grill ...the plastic behind the grill but in front of the radiator was on fire. My 15 year old son, quick lad that he is, retrieved his bottle of beloved Gatorade and a liter of Evian and doused the fire.
We ended up contacting BMW emergency service who put us in contact with a dealer in Farchant who opened the dealership up late Friday night. Apparently, their is an aux AC fan that is mounted to the fan shroud...also a couple of resistors are mounted to the plastic shroud. This is what ignited. Long story short, the fan has been disabled and the car checks out OK. Kidney grills are warped; canät really tell about hood paint yet as there are too many bugs on the hood. BMWNA offered to rent me a car for the duration of the trip but I elected to continue with my own M5. All in all, a disturbing incident, but BMW in Germany and in the USA were stellar in their assistance.
Question: does the yellow tach LED from 6,500 to 7,000 RPM ever go out. God, this crazy German keyboard is driving me nuts....
