I wondered if you could still do that in CA.
Note that the CA use tax (it's not technically sales tax - because the sale occurred outside CA) regulation on auto imports into CA says that the 90 days does NOT include time in transit or storage time awaiting shipment. So it is less than clear that storing the car in Europe and shipping to arrive >90 days from purchase will work to avoid the tax.

Also, the regulation is written as a presumption that cars brought into CA within 90 days ARE purchased for use in CA and therefore subject to the tax. It does not say that cars brought into CA beyond 90 days ARE NOT presumed purchased for use in CA. That may be how the rule is being applied, though.

Does not hurt to give this a try.
