Early M5s have a racing style elliptical piston ring which takes time to "seat" and tightens around the piston as it moves. Post 3/2000 M5s moved to a more conventional, non-racing style piston ring which "seats" quicker and doesn't allow as much oil to pass into the combustion chamber.
