I agree completely with you. One of the best parts of buying ///M cars has been that they are supposed to be high performance bmw cars meant for people who really love driving. As such, they should all have regular manual transmissions so you know that an old lady can't drive your car. Like I've said before, even though you can get similar results with an SMG, it's like listening to or playing in a computer controlled orchestra - it's just not the same as having the real instruments.
First of all, I'm not interested in the SMG. I would consider the 745i if I wanted a completely computer controlled automobile. I like the "retro" touch of driving a car with the feel of the road and engine. I like controlling the engine with the clutch. I like have the feel of the torque through the gearbox.

My X5, of course, is an automatic, and I enjoy it immensely. And sure, the SMG is not an automatic, but it gives up one more thing to the computer that I can't touch, feel and control. But I'm a retro grouch.

I spoke to people here from BMW, and they don't think that SMG will be on an M5. But you know that things happen at BMW just to surprise us.
