Has any body had a breakdown linked with the failure of the Vanos on one bank of pistons?

My 10/99 M5 had large loss of power and lumpy knocking when slowing rapidly after high revs. BMW breakdown said it could be small end gone but proved to be Vanos failure.

Two weeks to fix and cost BMW UK£1500 and they did a recommended upgrade to Vanos to improve oil pressure in these circumstances. Not sure of all details but I was not happy as you can imagine.

has anybody had similar problem ay 35k miles
