When the cars were side-by-side at 80MPH and the Viper *reacted* to the M5 and did not downshift, the Viper wasn't able to pass the M5 by 120MPH. When the Viper did downshift, it pulled a car length ahead by 120MPH.

While that's certainly respectable for the M5, it's not really "hanging" with the Viper. Between reaction and downshifting, the Viper was giving the M5 a 1-2 second head start and it was still a car length ahead just a few seconds later (it doesn't really take that long to go from 80-120).

However, it does mean that, if you catch a Viper sleeping on the highway, it might not be able to pass you before you shift out of 4th.
