How big a deal is M-audio system? (archive)

'01 M5 I'm interested in does not have it. Anyone with the standard stereo think it's REALLY bad? Is the M5 standard stereo similar to 540i standard, or enhanced stereo w/DSP)? If I decide to go for it, can the system be upgraded without too much trouble?
