I never suffered from either problem. As I understand it the Vanos issue is that it makes a rattle when you start up but is OK once it gets warmed up. The clutch appears to be weak but OK for normal use so unless you do a lot of racing starts should be OK. Anyway I understand in the uS the warranty is pretty comprehensive so I wouldn't worry. I did notice on BMWM5 board that someone had been offered 51K for their 2001 M5 from a BMW dealer so I am sure he would be happy to take 60K for it.
