I personally think that the M5 is the optimal car for the masses (ok, limited mass) right now. Given its performance, luxury, utility, and the $75k price. I seriousely doubt we will ever see another sedan with its capabilities at this price ever again.

Here are some points to consider about waiting it out:
What will the next car look like? Looks are very subjective, but I love the proportions and looks of the M5. There are few sedans that look better.

When will the next generation M5 be available? The current M5 trickled in around Fall 1999 after MUCH anticipation. Same as the current M3. BMW is bad in that sense, the wait and anticipation can be excruciating. There was almost a 3-year void between the E39 and its predecessor, if that's any indication.

How much will the new one cost then? When the E39 M5 first arrived, most of them were heavily marked up. San Francisco area dealers are still quoting $90k+ for almost any M5. So if we hit a hot economy when the next one debuts, it may be out of reach for a lot of us.

Buy now or wait? I got my M5, so that's my answer, and a lovely answer that is.

Good luck.

So given the choice would you buy a new 2002 or wait it out... ?
