I know Zahnrad Fabrik in Zufenhausen (ZF) makes alot of the manual trans. I am familar with Getrag as well. It also makes sence to specialize in a few things. You could look under the hood of most BMWs and probably find at least ten different corporate logos like Bosch and ATE.

But like you said, BMW is a Motor company. Good to hear it has stayed that way.

Is the GM slushbox branded GM or some other private label? Cant imagine the GM logo on a BMW.

The engine is all Bavarian. Unlike
Mercedes and other well known German
brands, BMW is first and foremost a
motor company. They have never built their
own transmissions in modern history.
Their manuals come from ZF and Getrag.
Although the auto in the 5 series comes
from GM, that doesn't mean it's the
same transmission that you'll find in
a Cadillac or Chevy. How many GM sedans
or coupes have a traditional longitudinal
powertrain compatible transmission? Also,
just because GM may build the transmission,
it does not necessarily mean GM builds and
tunes the controller (the part that makes the
transmission shift like it does).

BTW, many super high-end sports and lux cars
use GM automatic transmissions. It's one thing
that GM does really well.
