The tranny may be assembled there, but the "parts content information" portion of the window sticker on my 2001 540iA with the steptronic says "Transmission Parts: GERMANY". I guess they could make the parts in Germany, ship them to the U.S. for assembly, ship the transmission back to Germany to install in the car, and then ship it back to us, but it sure doesn't sound very efficient. At least the ones designated for the X5 get to stay here.
