the m3 & m5 are very close off the line, which means that the drivers would make the difference, but the m5 v8 kicks in on the highway where the m3's v6 is not able to hang with the m5, at speeds of 135-150 the m5 is ahead of the m3 and the m3 can't pass the m5
The M3 has a straight 6 not a V6. Most people don't realize that the straight 6 is inherently balanced (like a V12) and can be a smoother more powerful engine.
