Engine question (cylinder liners)? (archive)

Is the M5 engine similar to the 540 with respect to the block being aluminum (as opposed to cast iron) and liners in the cylinders to prevent damage due to gas additives?
Any comment on long-term reliability of the M5 engine - as much as someone can since they were only here in the states since '00?
