OK, here are the facts:

A greatly modified S4 might keep up with or be slight faster than an M5. What's the cost of that modification? Invalidation of warranty. Or if somehow you trick your dealer into honoring the warranty, then you have a car that outperforms it's tested abilities. That might be dangerous. and it's expensive.

And what's the resale value of a modified Audi? I have no clue, but my guess is that any normal person buying an Audi would assume that a modified Audi has not been treated well. It probably can't get a CPO status, so it's worth even less.

As for an Audi as a car, it rates far down with Ford and Chrysler on the JD Power quality rankings. (OTOH, BMW doesn't rate as high as Mercedes and Porsche.) Audi resale value, modified or not, falls way below BMW.

Back to speed. I think an M3 or a M Coupe could take an S4 modified or not. An M5 may be just a bit heavy to really outperform a modified S4 or an RS4 on a track. Back to the M3 or M Coupe.

But as has been written. An Audi is still an Audi. And again, I say, why do S4 drivers have to come on here and flame M5's and M3's. Envy. They just wish they could buy a BMW. :)
