should use 5w-30 oil.

pre-3/00-model m5s had a different piston set-up...an 'eliptical' racing-type piston to be exact (or so i have heard), that requires a more viscose oil such as 10w-60 to coat the piston walls properly. post-3/00-model m5s switched to a more conventional-type piston, that functions better with a less viscose oil such as 5w-30.

the dealer made a mistake once on a 2,500 mile oil change (my standard preventative maintenance program for all my new bmws) by putting 10w-60 oil into my 2/01 m5. the engine was real sluggish, and i had the dealer immediately change the oil to the engine compartment-sticker-recommended 5w-30 oil. the engine ran great thereafter.
