Nick, the differences known to me between a 535 V8 and the 540 V8 are power & torque, same suspension, same steering, same weight, same features, same brakes (euro version), etc.
Sure, 286 against 240 hp is quite a gap, and the torque is massive, but half a car? nope.
Anway, I'm putting the base of the 535 as far as ride goes, set aside power and torque.
If you mean the 535 is not half the car the 540 is, then the 540 is not A QUARTER of the M5...and that is a fact more than an appreciation, so it is irrelevant comparing either of the cars to one another.
I could take my 850 to compare against the M5, since the hp and the torque are superior to the 540's, yet it makes more sense to me talking about e-39's than using any other car out there as a basis for the M5. my 0.02 anyway.
Cheers,
Marcelo
