If we only take the HP difference, then imagine your 540 against a 523 (same hp diff: 400>286>172)or if you want, even a 528 (192 hp but torquier)Ride included, the 540 would be tighter than the 523 as well (but probably even here less difference than M5/540).
I had several BMW's (almost all 5 series) since 1985 (started with the e-28 528i, e-28 535iM (sport), e-34 525i 12v, e-34 535i, e-34 525i 24v, e-39 525 tds, e-39 535i + 2 e-30's and 1 e-31), I drove for 1 week a e-34 540, and NO ONE amazed me so much as the M5. No ONE even close to the monster, NO ONE had me realizing how bad a driver I really am (thought I knew how to drive fast...BS!)
Not untill you sit on the M5 (unless you had similar beasts) you know what acceleration is (not 0/60, but 90/130-140 too), and believe me,( I ride a 2 wheeler with 150 hp RWHP (Yoshi-kit), rode on track (amateur)), this is different. Again, not only about speed, but the way it delivers it and the way you must readdapt to the cornering speed on a public road, so, IMHO try riding an M5 before making up your mind, and then start comparing time sheets and price differences, or else, you'll never know.
