Norm,

I guy I know at Bimmer Magazine who is a former German trained and certified BMW master technician told me about it when I asked him why this was happening. Since it is more a nuisance than a safety or design defect, BMW probably doesn't worry about it. I haven't checked www.alldata.com to see if there is a service bulletin on it.....maybe there is now.

FYI, have the same problem occasionally with a 2000 740IL which I am swapping out tomorrow for a 2002 M5. So 'plus ca change...'
