I bought a set of Pirelli Snow Sport tires for my M5. There was not an exact match for sizes, so I went with 255 40R18's all around, using the standard wheels.

Just had our first snowstorn (my M5 is located in Santa Barbara, where all of my other cars are located). No problems whatsoever. I actually went into a deserted parking lot, turned off the DSC, turned on the Sport, and the car handled like a dream. No, the Pirelli's are no match for the Michelin Pilots on a dry road, but that's not my problem in the winter.

I am a firm believer in rear wheel drive in snow, if you are a good driver with good rubber on the car. I am now more convinced than ever. And with the DSC on, it will be hard to make a mistake.

So, don't be convinced by the lame BS from those Audi quattro drivers. Four wheel drive is excellent if you're dealing with 25" of snow or mud, as long as you have the clearance (i.e., Range rover time). But on your standard plowed but slick roads, i can take an S4 idiot any day.

Love,

Me
