Try calling the usual mail-order outfits for the following item ($10-12):

Kastar Computer Memory Saver Part #295A

It uses a 9v battery and plugs into the lighter socket and retains all memories.

Thanks. Do you know if BMW makes such an accessory. When we're talking about applying power to keep computer settings, if something happened, I'd feel better telling the dealer that I used a BMW-authorized part/accessory.

I wonder why the design is such that you must disconnect the battery just to check the fluid. Seems like a stupid design but maybe there's a good reason. If anyone knows, I'm interested.
