My E36/M3 and 540i/6 both had staggered wheel setups. Both had spare tire/wheel same size as front. Would this work for '01 M5 (i.e. would stock front M5 wheel 8"x17" with 245/40-18 tire fit on rear without a problem as a spare?

Thanks for confirming. As a matter of fact, I already have one damaged (a bit of curb rash) to use as a spare. I am replacing it with a new one that the dealer gave me at their cost (nice guy).
