BMW is quitting the Americian LeMans Series. BMW tested an M3 V8GTR two weeks ago that was fitted with the weight/power restrictions for the 2002 rules. Sadly, it was three seconds slower than last year's pace. It was even two seconds slower that last year's 911 GT3-R while the 911 is reported to be a second faster this year, ouch.
BMW will send its Factory Team to compete in the ETCC with the E46 320s.
Prototype Group Technology will also not be allowed to compete in the 2002 ALMS either with the V8 or straight-six. Team boss is reported to be shopping around for an alternative car to compete.
It was a mistake to race a V8 M3 in the first place and a bigger mistake to admit that the straight-six is not competetive. Mazda and Toyota (race under Lexus brand) will be competing the the ALMS, too bad we wouldn't be around to stomp on those bastards.
