cam sensors (archive)

I own a 2001 M5 and it started running funny. Took it to the dealer and they said a cam sensor went bad and possibly something wrong with the Vanos system. I have 24,500 miles on the car and it has always made a dieseling noise at idle. Dealer always told me it was normal. I am wondering if there was always something wrong? Has anyone else had this problem and how was it corrected?
