I wonder if the soft cutover on the Threes is because they are produced at multiple plants, so they can convert one to the new generation sedans while the old one produces coupes?

As far as I know, the E39 is produced only at Dingolfing, so I expect that their cutover is gonna be all at once.

As I recall, BMW supported two different body styles as the former 3 series came to a close. The newer version had already been introduced on the non M versions while the older M3 version was also sold - during the 2000 model year.

The E36 M3 seized production after the 1999 model ( only M3 coupes and M3 covertibles were offered through the 1999 production, while in the same production year only the E46 SEDAN was being offered. As the E46 coupe was introduced the E36 M3 coupe ended production, and the only m cars produced in 2000 were the M-coupe, M-roadsters, and the E39 M5)
It appears the strategy of BMW was to offer coupes and sedans in varying forms of the 3-series. IMO it is UNLIKELY that the E39 M5 will be simultaneously produced with the E60 5-series.)
