BMW has sent a bulltin to all dealers that oil should be changed at least yearly, regardless of lights. After a year has lapsed, they are to change the oil and not reset the lights. When the lights indicate another oil change, this is performed again and indicators reset. At this time the lights or 1 yr period starts again. One year with Synthetic oil is not too long. It does not break down easily, and the lubrication properties are less affected by contaminants. Particles are trapped by the filter.

I think BMW has spent alot of money and time to determine the best periods for the oil change. I am sure the dealers were against this, since they get less money from service. BMW would recommend it if their research indicated the interval would adversely affected the engine life. This would not be a good move for BMW long term. The thought that BMW did this to save money during the full maintenance period is without merit.

If you feel like you should change your oil every 1K miles, by all means do it. I think you are wasting your money, time, and resources.
