When service was for a fee, they didn't have synthetic oil, and the engines were not built to the tolerances as today. Advances in materials have also occurred. with the electronic engine management, teh engine should be operation at peak efficientcy almost all the time, creating less stresses, deposits, and wear on the engine. Synthetic oil symply doesn't break down significantly in 15K miles. You're living in the 70s.
