All BMW interior lights burn orange at exactly 605 nanometers of wavelength. Remember that starting with the 2001 model year (and including the new M3), BMW made the instrument panel gauge backgrounds gray. My 2000 has black backgrounds. When you apply an orange backlight to gray-faced gauges, it gives the appearance of being a little "whiter"
