by "order" I think you really mean "modify". that's when you get a production number, specify colors/options/etc. and get it scheduled for production. I've done it several times - it usually takes a month from the "modify" date until the "production month" - i.e. you modify by a certain fixed date in a particular month, and they schedule the car to be produced the next month. takes another 4 - 6 weeks to reach the west coast... was that way for my M3 made in Munich, 530i made in Dingolfing - same as the M5, and X5 made in Spartenburg (less transit time though). Once the car is made, you get a "port leave date" for when it leave Bremmerhaven, and you can tie that to a ship and actually track the ship on thier website: http://www.wlna.com/vescols.htm it takes a week or two for the car to be unloaded, prepped, and shipped to the dealer...
