I've run my '98 540iA with Dinan S/C against several M5's, most of them being high RPM freeway runs, and one very fair stoplight drag. (I won't detail all the runs) On the freeway runs, I've been able to walk away from the M5's on cold evenings, especially when I am in 3rd gear between 5500 and 6500 RPM, and then the 4th gear shift drops it at 5K... all good RPM's for the S/C as you can see from the dyno graph. On warm evenings I don't walk away from an M5 as fast on the freeway. Remember, I have two sources of heatsoak... the s/c and the block. You guys have active block cooling under the intake manifold, in addition to only one source of heatsoak being the block, which is an advantage. The stoplight drag was on a fairly cold night and it was a game of 2 car length catch up. By 60 I had caught up. By 80 I was 1/2 a car length ahead. If I had a 3.15 LSD like an M5, I believe I would catch up by 40 or so and pass by a full car length at 80. On warm evenings, same thing holds true about the heatsoak. The M5 has *more consistant* HP than a S/C 540i, however the s/c 540i has more HP above an estimated 3500 RPM when the ambient air temp is 70 degrees or less. The picture of the dyno shows me vs. an M5. Granted the M5 is in 4th gear and I am in 3rd, so the difference in my 4th gear may not be as great. I don't know enough about gearing to say either way.

A supercharged 540 is a FAST car. Add an Exhaust system and it is right at the M5 when it comes to rear wheel horsepower.
It is also well known that most mods done to a 540i are wasted dollars at resale time unless you are incredibly patient and find the exact buyer. M5 on the other hand will hold its value.
Dan,
I am thinking of S/C either a 540A or a E55(Kleemann). My question for you is how reliable is your Dinan S/C? Have you experienced costly repairs due to the S/C? How many years have you had your Dinan S/C 540, and how long will the S/C last?
Thanks for all info provided.
