I'm wondering about the comfort of a stiff sport suspension like that on the M5 or M3 - is it still comfortable if you are putting 18K miles a year on the car?

I've owned both. The m5 is much more comfortable. I found any drive in the m3 over 45min was uncomfortable. I'm not sure if that's due to a stiffer suspension or what I suspected was poor dampening qualities.
