Here are the facts:

The E39 M5 is based on the E39 5 series. If the E60 5 series truly starts shipping this fall, then the E39 M5 is done until a new E60-based M5 is developed. When the E46 3 series came out, the E36 4 door M3 was immediately done. They kept shipping E36 2 door M3's and convertibles because the E36 version of the main 3 series was still in production. The minute the new E46 3 series coupes and convertibles came out, the old E36-based M3 coupes and convertibles were done. Since the M5 and the E39 5 series are 4 door sedans ONLY, the current M5 is done the minute the new E60 5 series appears.

agree with all that (I actually bought one of the last - April '99 production - E36 M3 coupes - they stopped in May '99.) Plus they only make E39s in Dingolfing and coupes in Regensburg; vs. the 3er sedans which are made in Munich, So. Africa, and Dingolfing too I think - so they have more timing/model changeover options with 3er sedans than E39s or 3er coupes.

I would add that I understand the E60 would start production until model year '04, so E39s will continue through model year '03. And I also understand they may stop E39 M5 production earlier than other 5ers - around December... Since they probably have to retool the entire 5er line, and they still want continuing revenue for 5ers through model year 2003, they probably will bump up production in the second half of the year, and shut it down earlier than the typical Aug. 2 to re-tool for E60s for fall, '03 production...
