Not sure what you are asking exactly.
If you ask, "do M5's use oil"? Answer, "yes". If you ask, "how much"? Answer, "varies from car to car and also w/driving style".

heard a war story that M5s used a lot of oil. I was just curious.

I guess it depends on how you define a lot. Mine ('01) so far has used about 1qt in 2500 mi. I don't consider that too bad. More than my M3 and 540i, though. I have heard of a few having coosumption in the 1 qt per 800-1000 mi range. I would have that checked but even BMW might not do anything unless you could prove the car needed to have a "continuous IV drip".
