would the performance-version of Jaguar's lower-line car (which, as a vehicle platform, ranked poorly with comparable mid-line cars such as the 530i, audi, lexus, etc.) be able to stand toe-to-toe with the M5...just doesn't make sense...to me at least.


Because the platform used in the R has been changed beyond recognizion since the launching of the first S-type. The reason being, as you rightly point out, that the S-type was dynamically inferior to its competitors.
