My 02 M5 recommends 5W-30. I had a 01 M5 that recommended 10W-60. It's the same engine. Why the difference in recommended oil?
Thanks in advance.

M5's after 3/00 build date recommend 5W-30. There is a TSB on it which you can probably find in the archives. Earlier M5's use 10W-60. Some believe it was due to a piston ring redesign to reduce oil consumption, allowing newer M5's to use the lighter oil. Others believe it was pressure from the EPA on BMW to use lighter weight oil for increased gas mileage. Some believe both. The conventional wisdom is to use whatever oil is recommended for your vehicle according to any stickers under the hood. These would supercede the owner's manual which gets revised periodically so you never really know what version to rely on for such technical details (e.g I have two versions of the 2001 owner's manual that differ on this matter. However, under my hood it says to use 5W-30. I use 5W-30).

Rdgs,
Norm
