I think your dealer is correct (probably a lucky guess on his part!). From what I've been able to find out, only the U.S. M5's produced after 3/00 take 5W/30. This "may" be because it's cheaper and available at non-BMW dealers. Go to the e39 site on www.bmwm5.com and read more about this subject.


In June of 2000, BMW released a sercice bulletin saying that the M5's built after 3/00 should take 5W-30 oil. In October 2001, a new bulleting came out (replacing the June 200 bulletin) saying the E39 M5/S62 produced after 3/00 should take either 5W-30 or 10W 60. I'm totally confused. Which oil should I use in my 2001 M5 and what are the pros and cons of each oil. My dealer recommends the 10W 60 -- says it is better oil.
