The E46 board goes in waves and people love to jump on the bandwagon. Before the engines it was the 'clunk' in the rear end. There was even a poll over the weekend as to what the next big topic would be - like why they just added a strut brace. Many of the people who post of 'their' engine troubles don't even have a BMW, much less an M3. They just like to stir things up. My wife has a 2002 M3 convertible and it has been bullet proof. I have owned 5 BMW's in the last three years and have a very good relationship with my dealer so they shoot straight with me. They told me the only blown engines that have had come in have been from missed downshifts (i.e., 2nd instead of 4th) and they have had the same issue with M5's. The M's are more prone to this because they are driven harder and that is the only reason.

Its about time someone other then myself see's through all the message board BS. It amazes me that people would actually cancell an order because of what they read on these boards. Funny, I am very close with 2 major dealers and not one has had a single M3 come back, no clunks and no blown motors. 2 745's have come back though, 1 for Idrive and the other for a complete tranny swap :)
