e23 745i wheel offsets (archive)

I just purchased an '83 745i and am looking to upgrade my wheels and tires from the dreaded TRX to something more performance oriented.

I currently have a '88 635CSi w/ Mille Miglia 11/2 16x8 w/ Yokohama 225-50/16's. I tried to transfer these wheels to my 745i since I was told 5,6,7 series (20 series models) all can accept the same wheels, and to my surprise, no go. On the front wheel of the 745i, the bearing cap extends much farther out than my 635 and knocks the cap out of the wheel and it looks like the tire would rub the strut if I were able to mount the wheel.

Are the offsets different???

What wheel size and offset should I use for my 745i?

Can I use some type of adapter for my MM 11/2's??

Please advise.

Thanx,

Mark
