Need new tires for E30 M3 (archive)

I have an 88M3 with 17' M-contour wheels, current;y they have 225/45 tires that rub on the arches pretty badly. I was told to get 205/40 to get rid of the rubb. Will this be correct, or is there another combo that would work better? Also what tires brand should I use?
