Question about buying 2 new tires (archive)

I have a '98 Z3 2.8 with the 17" wheels.
Front is 225/45/17 and the rears are 245/40/17.
The current tires that I have now, which have been simply superb, are the BFG g-Force T/A KDs.

I have a concern about buying them again, however. I relatively recently bought two new BFGs because I had a nail that messed one up in the rear and the other rear got worn. That was a few thousand miles ago.
My rear tires still look fine.
However, with about 23,000 miles, my front tires are considerably worn. In fact, driving in the rain it's like driving in ice and I had to countersteer to remain in control.

I will be going on a 3500 mile roadtrip on April 1st and I need new tires soon. The only issue I have with buying two new KDs for the front is cost. I don't want to spend another $500+.

Would performance driving (in the dry) become very wacky if I bought cheaper tires for the front?

What do you recommend? Buy two new KDs for the fronts or replace them with a cheaper tire (to hopefully yield equivalent performance results).

Thanks,
Michael Wand
