Imagine if BMW had just decided to bolt on Chevy Cavalier suspension and wheels on your Z3 to bring costs down. If they had made it FWD. How much cheaper do you think it would be? $5K less maybe? That means that BMW spend about $5000 to make your car handle really well. I wouldn't take a chance at destroying all that just for a few hundred dollars. If you drove a Chevy it would make sense. On a Z3 where you have already made a substantial investment into handling, I don't think its worth the savings.
