Your are correct. Tires are designed to operate in an ideal temperature range, which for that type of maximum performance tire is in a warmer operating temp (say better above 50'F), where an all season compound is designed to not operate in a highest temp range like the S02, but will be better in temps (say down to 0'F), so as the ambient temps get warmer, the tires grip & feel better!
